Spring 2010 Newsletter
Squash
In the spring tournaments Mike Stewart won again and
Michaela Barwick took the Ladies’ title
Mike Stewart won a thrilling 5-setter against Matt Hall and Michaela
Barwick also pipped Sheila Fox 3-2 in another tight match. A full list
of winners is displayed in the club.
This Winter’s Surrey Cup season began with much promise for both
teams but ended in what is probably best described as a lack of glory.
The Men’s First Team managed to maintain their usual position
with a mid-table finish in what proved to be a very tough group, but a
squad strengthened by the addition of Jeremy should have done a little
better. It was another strong year from stalwart Captain Mike Stewart,
but he lacked support from a team that was too often on holiday or
injured. The price of success…
The Second Team benefited greatly from the Club’s experimental
decision to run only two teams this year. With a large squad to choose
from, Ian Pickup almost steered the team into a promotion slot only to
lose out in the last couple of weeks. However, the strength of the
squad meant that many players who have been in teams at Ashtead for
years and who wanted to play were left out in the cold. Therefore, the
decision has been taken to run three teams next year, with Phil Dee
taking the reins of power; hopefully the interest that has been stirred
up will not wane when Phil calls! The Club has more than enough members
to run three teams; all it takes is a small level of commitment. Talk
to Phil if you want to get involved.
The Ladies Team managed to maintain their position in the league quite
comfortably, but Sheila Fox only rarely managed to get out her first
choice team and was on the wrong end of some very tight matches;
another game here or there would have changed the table dramatically
and there is definitely much hope for the future as the squad continues
to grow.
The Vets 1st team are very well placed and have a decent chance of
finishing behind Colets, who are the leaders in the division and will
undoubtedly be promoted. This success is in large part
attributable to Captain Steve Hanrahan’s ability to field a
regular group of players this year. The Vets 2nd team are holding their
own in their division and are placed around 3rd; it’s been a
successful season even though promotion looks out of reach this year.
Special thanks this year go to all the players but especially Steve
Hanrahan and Mike Standring for captaining the 1st and 2nd teams
respectively. A special mention must also go out to Jon Gransden, who
simply refuses to lose a match; an inspiration to all younger Vets! Any
squash member over 45 is welcome to play for the Vets; please let
Graham Smith (Men's Captain) know if you are interested. Finally, we
look forward to welcoming Jim Flynn into the Vets next season, both in
terms of having a new Number One, and from the upturn in bar takings on
a Saturday afternoon that will surely result from his participation!
Junior Squash
Coaching takes place every Thursday afternoon and Sunday lunchtime,
starting on the 22nd and 25th April respectively, under Jeremy
Colton’s tutelage and we have many teams entered in Surrey County
Competitions. To take advantage of the sessions and find out more about
the junior teams, please see the junior notice board, and please
don’t hesitate to contact Jeremy on 07967 392495 and
J.Colton@Sky.com.
Club Nights
For those who are unaware, Club Night is every Monday and starts at
7.00 pm. Players rotate by having one game, up to 21, American scoring,
with as many different players as time permits. There is a charge of
£2 per head (apart from the juniors, who do not pay) and it is an
ideal way for members to get to meet each other… Team players
have been known to turn up and are encouraged to do so; watch out
though, as if you take a serious scalp you may be called upon to
represent your club, whether you want to or not! Seriously though,
it’s fun; try to attend when you can.
Tennis
Now, if we believe the Met Office after all the inaccuracies of the
last few years, it is supposed to be a BARBEQUE SUMMER! If the
weather’s nice then there’s no better way to spend a
morning or afternoon than on court.
Social/roll-up sessions take place on Wednesday evenings from about
6-30 onwards and on Saturday Mornings from around 10-00 to 12-30. All
are welcome; if you play, then why not play here?
For more committed players, we have five teams entered in the local
Leatherhead and Dorking League; two Men’s, one Mixed, one Mixed
Vets and one Ladies’ team. Anyone interested in playing for the
teams should contact; Peter Ward (Men’s 1), Don Lloyd
(Men’s 2), Brian Mitchell (Mixed), Gerry Gulson (Mixed Vets) and
Judy Baker (Ladies); their numbers are by the booking sheets, and
George can always help to put you in touch. All captains will be keen
to have additional squad members.
Finally, in the manner of London buses, we have not one, but two
coaches who are qualified to get you serving like Roddick and volleying
like Tiger Tim. Individual lessons are available with both Mandy
Beaumont and Simon McCarthy throughout the week and on the weekend at
£20 per hour (adult or junior) plus a court fee. Also, please
find on our tennis
pages attached details about courses that are being run by Mandy.
The ProBack Chiropractic clinic returned on Saturday, 8th May,
primarily to give the tennis players a free consultation after their
morning roll-up. However, all are welcome.
Wimbledon tickets: The club has been allocated 6 pairs of tickets this
year. To be eligible for entry to the draw for the tickets, club
members must have British Tennis Membership, which is free.
Joining details on the Tennis notice board in the club.
Draw entry sheets are located on the Tennis notice board in the
club.
The draw will take place on Tuesday 11th May at the clubhouse at
7-00pm. Winners present will have first choice of tickets.
Racketball
Racketball is an excellent game for our older members, who may be
beginning to find squash a little too strenuous, as well as our
youngsters who want to try something a little different. Simply sign up
on the league sheet to get involved, and George has rackets and balls
behind the bar for sale and available to rent for those who wish to try
the game. Special thanks must go to Steve Holmes, who is now running
the leagues and who will organize a tournament later in the year. He is
also thinking of entering a team into the Surrey leagues; if you are
even remotely interested in playing then please do let him know as the
idea will not take off without some support. The leagues are in the
same format as the squash ones, with four players making up a
team… We only need four players to make a go of it so please do
register your interest.
Social Events
George continues to work tirelessly to increase the number and variety
of social events at the club, and has had a great amount of success. In
recent weeks there have been Golf Society days at Slinfold Golf Club
and Tyrrells Woods, which were well-attended, great value, and
thoroughly enjoyed by all (keep your eyes peeled for notices about the
next golf day), and a Day at the Races, which was also a great (if a
little expensive in some cases!) success, as well as a night of
entertainment from the awesome Sidewinder. The monthly quiz night,
which takes place on the last Friday of the month just after the 100
Club draw, continues to attract a healthy turnout, although George can
always find room for an extra team. There is also a popular Bridge Club
run by Richard Skeet and, if you would like to join in, speak to
Richard or George.

A few final notes…We urge you to check that the club has your
current email address, so that you can be kept up to date with news and
events. Also please note that the Club has its own page on Twitter;
we’re positively steaming into the 21st Century! Jeremy is on
hand too for the Club’s stringing – just leave your rackets
behind the bar with your required spec and they’ll be done within
a couple of days. Finally, if there are any other ideas you have for
improving the club then please do share them with a member of the
Committee; the Club’s development rests on the enthusiasm and
involvement of its members
